How to Set Up a Web Site

Summary: Use WebFiles to host a simple Web site. You will need to create the HMTL files in another program and upload them to your WebFiles space.

Step 1: Create your public Web directory.

  1. Login to your WebFiles account.
  2. In your Home directory, click on the New Directory icon.

  3. In the "Directory Name:" field, type www
  4. Click OK

You have just created your Web directory.

Step 2: Share you Web directory.
To allow people to view your Web space, you need to "share" the directory or set the permissions.

  1. Click on the Share icon next to your www directory.

  2. In the Public row, check the Read box.
    Leave the rest of the permissions unchecked.
  3. Click Apply Now
  4. Click the Back link to go back to the "www" directory. This directory is now publically viewable.

Step 3. Upload some HTML files.
Create your Web pages in your favorite Web editor or write your page using HTML markup language. Your main page should be titled, "index.html"

  1. In your "www" directory, click the Upload icon.
  2. Click on the Browse button to navigate to your "index.html" file.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Your "index.html" file is now uploaded.
  5. Click on the "index.html" link in your "www" directory to see your page. (Note: if there are images or other dependent files you will need to upload them as well.)

You now have the beginnings of your own simple Web site. Your Web address (URL) will be something like: http://webfiles.uci.edu/ucinetid/www/ (Replace ucinetid with your UCInetID.)

Note: WebFiles does not support dynamic Web pages using PHP, .NET, CGIs, PERL or ColdFusion.
