Changing Stored UCInetID Passwords
Summary: If you have recently changed your UCInetID password, you may have to update the applications or devices you use with this account including email from OIT Mailbox Services (Webmail.uci.edu, imap.uci.edu, pop.uci.edu). Many applications and devices will prompt you for the new password. If they do not, use the instructions below.
Updating Stored Passwords
Email Applications
Thunderbird (Windows)
If the saved password is incorrect, Thunderbird should prompt you for a new password. If it does not, follow the directions below.
- Launch the Thunderbird application.
- Select the Tools menu and choose Options.
- The Options window will open. Click on the Privacy icon.
- Click the Passwords tab.
- Click the Edit Saved Passwords button.
- The Password Manager window will appear. Select your UCI account (example, imap://ucinetid@imap.uci.edu).
- Click the Remove button.
- Select your UCI SMTP setting, (example, smtp://ucinetid@smtp.uci.edu)
- Click the Remove button.
- Click the Close button.
- Click the OK button to close the Options window and then quit Thunderbird.
- Launch Thunderbird again. You should then be prompted to type in your new password when you send or receive mail. Select Use Password Manager to remember this password to save this new password.
Thunderbird (Macintosh)
If the saved password is incorrect, Thunderbird should prompt you for a new password. If it does not, follow the directions below.
- Launch the Thunderbird application.
- Select the Thunderbird menu and choose Preferences.
- The preferences window will open. Click on the Privacy icon.
- Click the Passwords tab.
- Click the Edit Saved Passwords button.
- The Password Manager window will appear. Select your UCI account (example, imap://ucinetid@imap.uci.edu).
- Click the Remove button.
- Select your UCI SMTP setting, (example, smtp://ucinetid@smtp.uci.edu)
- Click the Remove button.
- Click the red button in the upper left corner to close the Password Manager window.
- Click the red button in the upper left corner to close the Preferences window and quit Thunderbird.
- Launch Thunderbird again. You should then be prompted to type in your new password when you send or receive mail. Select Use Password Manager to remember this password to save this new password.
Outlook Express / Windows Mail
If the saved password is incorrect, Outlook Express/Windows Mail should prompt you for a new password. If it does not, follow the directions below.
- Launch the Outlook Express/Windows Mail application.
- Select the Tools menu and choose Accounts.
- [ Outlook Express only. ] The Internet Accounts window will open. Click on the Mail tab.
- Highlight your account name and click the Properties button.
- Click the Servers tab.
- In the Password: field, type in your new password.
- Click the Settings button. The Outgoing Mail Server window will open. Be sure Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected. Click the OK button.
- Click the Apply button, then click the OK button.
- Click the Close button.
Apple Mail
If the saved password is incorrect, Apple Mail should prompt you for a new password. If it does not, follow the directions below.
- Launch the Mail application.
- Select the Mail menu and choose Preferences from the list.
- The Preferences window will open. Click the Accounts icon.
- In the Accounts column on the left side of the window, highlight your account and then click the Account Information tab.
- Type your new password in the Password: field.
- Click the Server Settings... button.
- Information about your smtp settings will appear. Type your new password in the Password: field.
- Click the OK button.
- Click the red button in the upper left corner to close the preferences window. You will be prompted to save your changes; click the Save button.
Eudora (Windows & Macintosh)
- Launch the Eudora application.
- From the Special menu, select Forget Password(s)
- Quit Eudora.
- Launch Eudora again.
- Check your email. Eudora should prompt you for a new password.
Outlook 2003
If the saved password is incorrect, Outlook 2003 should prompt you for a new password. If it does not, follow the directions below.
- Launch the Outlook 2003 application.
- Select the Tools menu and choose E-mail Accounts.
- Select View or change existing e-mails accounts and click the Next button.
- The E-mail Accounts window will open. Highlight your account name and click the Change... button.
- In the Password: field, type in your new password.
- Click the More Settings... button. Select the Outgoing Server tab. Be sure Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected. Click the OK button.
- Click the Next button, then click the Finish button.
Entourage 2004
If the saved password is incorrect, Entourage 2004 should prompt you for a new password. If it does not, follow the directions below.
- Launch the Entourage application.
- Select the Tools menu and choose Accounts from the list.
- The Accounts window will open. Click the Mail tab.
- Highlight your account and then click the Edit button.
- Type your new password in the Password: field.
- Click the Click here for advanced sending options button.
- Information about your smtp settings will appear. Make sure the radio button next to Use same settings as receiving mail server is selected.
- Click the box in the upper left corner to close the window.
- Click the OK button.

PDA and Smartphone Devices
VersaMail for Palm
- Launch the VersaMail application in your Palm device.
- Press the menu button.
- From the Accounts menu, select Account set up.
- Highlight your UCI mail account and choose Edit.
- In the Account Setup screen, choose Next.
- The next screen should contain your username and password. If you have saved your password, it will read Assigned.
- Tap the Assigned field with your stylus.
- Enter in your new password and tap OK.
- Tap Next two more times without making any other changes to your mail settings and tap Done when prompted.
- Your new password should now be saved.
Blackberry Devices
- Choose Profiles > Email Account and select other mail accounts.
- Click on your UCI mail account.
- In the Password field, enter your new UCInetID password.
- Click Submit.
Outlook Mobile
- Go to your messaging application.
- Press Start.
- Locate and launch Messaging.
- Locate the UCI mail account and choose Select.
- Press Menu.
- Scroll down and press on Options.
- Scroll down and press on Account Options.
- Locate your account and select it.
- Press Next.
- Scroll down to your password and change it.
- Press Next until prompted to finish. Press Finish.

VPN Application
- Launch the VPN client application.
- Highlight the connection entry you want to change ("Merage", "MerageFull", "UCI", or "UCIFull").
- Click on the Modify button.
If you don't see a modify button, you are most likely in simple mode. Choose the Options menu and Advanced Mode from the VPN client menu or type Control & M on the keyboard (in Windows) or Open apple & M on the keyboard (on a Mac).
- Under the Authentication tab, in the lower left-hand corner, click on the Erase User password button.
DO NOT change any information for the fields "name","password", or "group password" under Group Authentication. This will force a client re-install.
- Click on the Save button to return to the Connection selection window.

Web Browsers
Firefox (Windows)
If the saved password is incorrect, Firefox should prompt you for a new password. If it does not, follow the directions below.
- Launch the Firefox application.
- From the Tools menu, select Options.
- Click on the Privacy icon in the top toolbar.
- In the Passwords section, click the View Passwords button.
You may be required to type in your master password if you have that option selected.
- A Remember Passwords window will open.
- Find the https://webmail.uci.edu entry in the list and select it. Click the Remove button below the list.
You may also remove any other Web application that uses your UCInetID and password, like SNAP.
- Close the Passwords window.
- Close the Tools window.
Firefox (Macintosh)
If the saved password is incorrect, Firefox should prompt you for a new password. If it does not, follow the directions below.
- Launch the Firefox application.
- From the Firefox menu, select Preferences.
- Click on the Security icon in the top toolbar.
- In the Passwords section, click the Show Passwords button.
You may be required to type in your master password if you have that option selected.
- A Remember Passwords window will open.
- Find the https://webmail.uci.edu entry in the list and select it. Click the Remove button below the list.
You may also remove any other Web application that uses your UCInetID and password, like SNAP.
- Close the Passwords window.
- Close the Preferences window.
Internet Explorer 7 (Windows)
If the saved password is incorrect, Internet Explorer may ask you if you want to change it. Say yes, this will only change the stored version of the password to the correct one. If Internet Explorer does not ask, follow the directions below.
- Launch the Internet Explorer 7 application.
- From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
- Click on the General Tab.
- Under Browsing History click on Delete.
- A pop up window will emerge. Under Passwords choose Delete Passwords
- Click Yes for Are you sure you want to delete all previously saved form passwords?
- Click Close.
- Click OK.
- Restart Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer 6 (Windows)
If the saved password is incorrect, Internet Explorer may ask you if you want to change it. Say yes, this will only change the stored version of the password to the correct one. If Internet Explorer does not ask, follow the directions below.
- Launch the Internet Explorer 6 application.
- From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
- Choose the Content tab.
- Click on Auto complete.
- Click on Clear Passwords.
- Click OK to close the window, then click OK again.
Safari (Macintosh)
If the saved password is incorrect, Safari should prompt you for a new password. If it does not, follow the directions below.
- Launch the Safari application.
- From the Safari menu, select Preferences.
- Click on the AutoFill icon in the top toolbar.
- Click the Edit button next to User names and passwords.
- Find the https://webmail.uci.edu entry in the list and select it.
You may also remove any other Web application that uses your UCInetID and password, like SNAP.
- Click the Remove button below the list.
- Click the Done button.
- Close the Preferences window.
