*** The billable design, planning, and estimating activities for cabling typically involve a number of OIT staff who work closely with OIT clients to perform a detailed needs assessment, to understand and document the scope of the cabling project, to design and present solution alternatives, and to develop and present detailed cost estimates.  It also involves establishing contracts through Facilities Management to hire cabling contractors, scheduling and coordinating resources, performing detailed site surveys to confirm the condition of existing infrastructure (pathways and existing cables), and materials acquisition.

**** The billable design, planning and estimating activities for network related projects are similar to those activities for cabling projects.  Network design, planning and estimating involves a number of staff including network engineers and network planners who work closely with OIT clients to perform a detailed needs assessment, to understand and document the scope of the project, to design and present solution alternatives, and to develop and present detailed cost estimates.  The engineers also write detailed implementation plans and instructions for the OIT technicians, order network equipment and materials, develop an implementation schedule, and pre-announce any service outages.
