Srsh

What is srsh?

srsh is a "secure remote shell" facility.

It is used to execute a shell script, on each of many UNIX hosts, in an automated manner.

What does DCS use srsh for?

We use srsh when we need to change something on all the UNIX machines we support.

srsh has been used, for example, to:

  • Apply security patches on each host that needs a patch.
  • To collect information about the hosts we maintain. From this periodically-collected information, we can gain information about hosts that have developed hardware trouble, which is often helpful in resurrecting a machine. For instance, it can be helpful to have record of:
    • a machine's previous partition tables, after a disk crash.
    • a machine's boot device, after a motherboard failure.
  • Add an entry to /etc/shells, when a new shell is added to dcslib - to allow that shell to be fully used as a shell, on any UNIX host mounting dcslib.
