A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer-based utility that combines map displays with a database such that each and every feature on the map (represented as points, lines and polygons) has information in the database that characterizes the feature. Using the GIS, spatial and database queries can be applied to the data and spatial analyses of the data can be performed.

At UCI we have a campus-wide license for ESRI's GIS software: ArcGIS, ArcPad, ArcIMS and other utilities. You can read about the license at http://licenses.oit.uci.edu/arcgis.
