UCI Student Information Technology Experience (SITE) Survey
Winter 2007
Summary: During Winter 2007, NACS surveyed UCI students about their experiences with Information Technology (IT) and UCI IT services. The survey was a collaborative effort based on input from Student Affairs, the Division of Undergraduate Education, the UCI Libraries, and others.

Overview
Approximately 3,000 undergraduates responded to the survey; they were asked a range of questions about the technology they own, use on campus and elsewhere, and how it affected their experiences at UCI and in learning in particular. A few key facts coming out of the survey are:
- 99% have their own computers: 83% have laptops; 54% desktops; 37% have both.
- 95% of those with computers use them daily.
- 88% of those with laptops use them daily; 52% use them away from their residences at least a few times a week.
- 67% of those with desktop computers use them daily.
- 76% have iPods or equivalent (43% of those with such devices use them daily)
- 85% use UCI email daily; 98% also have non-UCI email and 67% of these use their non-university email daily.
- 44% use EEE daily; 90% at least a few times a week.
- 51% use online social interaction tools daily; 77% use it at least a few times a week.
- 93% use instant messaging; 53% of these use it daily.
- 34% use cell phone text messaging daily; 58% use it at least a few times a week.
- Only 12% use cell-phone web access at least a few times a month.
- 69% say they are more engaged in courses with technology (IT)
- 86% say instructors use IT well
- 90% say IT helps them learn
- 93% say IT helps them communicate with their instructors
- 94% say IT helps them with research
- 29% use laptops in class only for class-related reasons; 3% for non-class reasons; 14% for both.
