UCI Sub Domain Guidelines
Summary: If you would like a top level UCI
sub domain (xxxx.uci.edu), read the guidelines below before sending your request.
Guidelines for assignment of UCI Top Level Network Sub-domains
- November 1, 2001
Introduction
UCI "sub-domains" are defined as the highest naming level within
the "uci.edu" network domain. Sub-domains are represented as xxx.uci.edu – for
example, nacs.uci.edu, bio.uci.edu, etc.
Assignment of sub-domains is administered by Network and Academic Computing
Services (NACS). The existence of a particular sub-domain implies that the
entity represented is an official campus-wide organization or program.
Criteria for UCI sub domains:
- An official UCI school, department, or other organizational unit.
- An officially recognized research entity as listed on Research and Graduate
Studies Web page: http://www.rgs.uci.edu/ru/index.htm
- A campus-wide program or service that does not belong within an existing
UCI sub-domain, or is most appropriately represented as a campus-wide activity.
Request a UCI Sub Domain
Requests for new sub-domains should be supported by the person or persons in
charge of the entity the sub-domain will represent. Requests should be sent
to nacs-nsp@uci.edu and include
information about the nature of the program or entity for which the name
is being requested, and where it fits into UCI’s organizational structure.
Sub Domain Approval Process
The allocation of new sub-domains is subject to the approval of the Director
of NACS, in consultation with appropriate campus officials. Once the request
has been reviewed and approved DNS (Domain Name Service) will be updated.
