Connecting to UCInet with Windows 95
Summary: This handout is a comprehensive set
of instructions to configure Windows 95 to work with the UCI modem pool.
How to Activate Your UCInetID
-
Before you connect to UCInet, you must have already
activated your UCInetID. To do this, locate a computer that already has
internet access and go to the Web page: http://activate.uci.edu.
Creating a Dial-Up Networking Connection
This is where UCI's phone number, your login
name and your password are stored.
-
Double-click on "My Computer" then "Dial-Up
Networking" then "Make New Connection."
-
Type UCInet on the first line. Then click
on Next (See Figure 1). NOTE: Do not change the "Select a modem"
box, as your modem should already be listed correctly.

- Type 949 in the Area Code box and
then 824-9999 in the Telephone Number box. Click Next
when finished. (See Figure 2)

on Finish. A new icon will be created in the Dial-Up Networking
folder.
- You may copy the UCInet icon onto the desktop
by opening My Computer then Dial-Up Networking. Select the
UCInet
icon and drag it to the desktop. A shortcut to UCInet will appear on the
desktop.

Configuring Network Settings
In order to connect with UCInet, the TCP/IP protocol and Dial-Up
Adapter must be installed. This section is to confirm, or if necessary,
install the required network components. If installing missing components
is necessary, you MAY need your Windows 95 CD or Installation Files. If
at any time you have a problem, press Cancel.
-
Click on the Start button then select Settings then Control
Panel. In the Control Panel, double-click on the Network
icon. The Network window will appear.
-
Under the Configuration tab, the phrase "The following network
components are installed:" should appear. Confirm that Dial-up Adapter
and TCP/IP are installed. Generally, if you see the words Dial-Up
Adapter or TCP/IP anywhere in this window, then you should be
ok and do NOT need to install any components (See Figure 5). There may be
other components installed, do not remove them. If both Dial-Up Adapter
and TCP/IP are installed, click on Cancel and skip this entire
section.

in lowercase. (See Figure 9)
Figure 9
- Once connected, you may use a Web browser, check e-mail and use most other
Internet programs. Please note: Only some versions of Windows
95 come with pre-installed Internet software. If your version of Windows
95 has pre-installed Internet programs, they can be found by pressing the Start
Button and
navigating through the Program
menu.
The Error Messages
There are two error messages that may appear
when a user has either exceeded the time limit or when the wrong password
and/or login name has been entered.
-
If you receive the error message shown in Figure
10, you have entered an invalid username or password. Please retype your
username and password in the "Connect To" window and try again
(See Figure 9).
Figure 10
- If you receive the error message shown in
Figure 11, you may have exceeded the Prime-Time limit. The Prime-Time limit
is the maximum number of hours that you are permitted to be connected to
the UCI modem pool during the prime-time hours of 6:00pm to 1:00am Sunday
through Thursday. This limit is a rolling time limit in which you may be
connected to the UCI modem pool for a maximum of 10 hours in a continuous
7 day (168 hour) time period. If you have any questions or would like to
verify your usage, please visit http://www.nacs.uci.edu/network/modem/
and select "Check My Prime Time Usage" or you may call OIT at (949) 824-2222.
