LifeLine Modem Service
The Office of Information Technology has discontinued the LifeLine Modem Service as of May 1, 2012.
There are several factors affecting our decision to end the service:
- The use of the modem service continues to decline. The grand majority
of the UCI community has chosen to use higher performance commercially
provided alternatives for connecting to the Internet and UCI computing
resources. The modem service does not provide the high-speed access
required of today’s graphic-intense Web applications.
- The UCI modem service is unreliable because it is running on old hardware that is no longer supported by the vendor. When the hardware fails it will not be cost effective to replace it. We have some spare equipment, but a failure could force us to discontinue the service without warning.
- The cost of commercial high-speed Internet service, such as cable modem or DSL services, has declined and competitive pricing is available
from a number of providers. Free and low cost commercially provided dial-up modem Internet access services are also available.
- We encourage you to consider migrating to an Internet service that
provides high-speed “always connected” access to the Internet. Please
send feedback and questions
regarding our plans to discontinue the UCI LifeLine Modem Service to Brian Buckler, Director of Network, Infrastructure, and Desktop Support.
