OIT Network Registration Information

Summary: Register your computer or server for use on the UCI network using the form and information provided below. This involves getting an IP address and a DNS domain name. If you have any questions about this process please send e-mail to oit@uci.edu with your questions or comments.

Note: UCINetID login required on all forms.

About Computer Use on the UCI Network

All computer systems connected to the UCI network must be registered with OIT. There are several ways your computer can be registered for use on the UCI network. If you have a laptop with wireless networking, you can register your wireless connection for use on the UCI wireless network. If you are connecting a computer system to the wired UCI network, you must request an IP address and domain name. (One exception to this is if you have DHCP assigned IP addresses on your local network.)

About IP Addresses

Every computer that communicates on the Internet must be assigned an IP address that uniquely identifies the computer. An IP address consists of 32 bits, more commonly displayed as 4 groups of decimal numbers, usually called octets, for example: 128.200.222.100. All computers at UCI that will be communicating on the UCI network and/or the Internet must be assigned an IP address. Because having two computers with the same IP address can cause problems, it is important to register an IP address before use.

Sometimes an IP address can be assigned automatically. At UCI some of the networks on campus assign an IP address automatically using a server program called DHCP. This allows you to connect your desktop or laptop computer to the UCI network without having to configure your network with a special IP address. The IP address is assigned automatically.

For easier administration and security of networks, IP addresses can be divided into sections. These sections are usually called the network, subnet and host. At UCI we have three network addresses, 128.200, 128.195 and 169.234, using the first two octets of the IP address. (If you are located in the Medical Center, (160.87), please contact your local computer support person.) We generally use the third octet as the subnet and the fourth octet as the host. When requesting an IP address and domain name, you will need to know what network and subnet your computer is located on. If you don't, then you should ask your Computing Support Coordinator. We will assign the host number.

About Domain Names

A fully qualified domain name identifies one or more IP addresses by name. For example, the domain name www.uci.edu identifies a computer that has been assigned the IP address 128.200.222.219. Domain names are used to identify computers because they are easier to remember than the IP address number. At UCI it also helps to identify to whom the computer belongs because we use the department name as part of the domain name. For example, www.oit.uci.edu is the name of the web server for the OIT department, (Office of Information Technology). So, "oit" is included in the domain name. When you register an IP address and domain name, your department will also be included in your domain name.

Requesting an IP Address and Domain Name

To request an IP address and domain for your computer you will need to have your UCINetID and password ready. (UCINetID Information) The IP Address/DNS request form will ask some basic questions about you, your CSC, the person responsible for the computer, the location of the computer, your network, and your computer.

After you login using your UCINetID and password, you will be presented with a form. Using information from our on-line directory, your personal information will already be filled in.

Next you will be asked who your Computing Support Coordinator is. You can choose from the drop down list menu. If your CSC is not listed in the drop down, please contact the OIT Help desk at (949)824-2222.

The next section is the contact information for the person responsible for this computer. This person might be you, the professor in charge of the project for which this computer is used, or someone else. This information is required.

The information collected in the "IP Address and Domain Name" section helps us to determine exactly which IP address to assign to your computer. If you are in the same location as the computer you are requesting an IP address for, then you can probably use the suggested subnet and domain. If you don't know what these are, you should contact your Computing Support Coordinator.

About Servers

Systems that require connections initiated from off-campus are considered to be servers. This would include systems that host web sites, ftp servers, mail servers, and other server applications. Every computer that communicates on the Internet could possibly be used as a server in one way or another. For example, if you use Windows XP and connect to your UCI desktop from home using Remote Desktop Connection, then your UCI desktop would have to be registered as a server. All servers at UCI that will be accepting connections initiated from off-campus must be registered as a server. Once UCI's server registration policy is fully in effect, if your computer is not registered as a server, connections from outside the UCI network will be blocked.

Registering your Computer as a Server

To register your computer as a server, you will need to have your UCINetID and password ready. (UCINetID Information) The server registration form will ask some basic questions about you, your CSC, the person responsible for the computer, the location of the computer, the IP address and domain name assigned to your computer.

After you login using your UCINetID and password, you will be presented with a form. Using information from our on-line directory, your personal information will already be filled in.

Next you will be asked who your Computing Support Coordinator is. You can choose from the drop down list. If your CSC is not listed in the drop down, please contact the OIT Help desk at (949)824-2222.

The next section is the contact information for the person who is responsible for the computer that you are registering as a server. This person might be you, the professor in charge of the project for which this computer is used, or someone else. This information is required.

Selecting Server Ports to Open

Please select the ports that you would like to have open on your computer. Only ports actively in use should be selected. If you do not understand this section, please contact your CSC for help.

Computer Information

Various information about your computer system and responsible parties is required for all connections to the UCI network. You will need to provide your UCINetID, the contact information for the responsible person, the contact information for your CSC, the hardware type of your computer, and the operating system used on your computer.

Comments

The "Comments" section of the form is for you to explain any details that may be needed to register your computer system that aren't already included on the form.
