Connecting to UCInet Mobile Access with Windows XP Home & Professional

VERY IMPORTANT: Before applying the following changes to your computer's networking configuration, write down your current networking configuration!

Note: To use the UCI Mobile Access, you must first register your MAC (Media Access Control) address. You will need your UCInetID and password to authenticate. http://www.nacs.uci.edu/ucinet/mobile/registration.html

  1. Make sure your wireless card is turned on or plugged in. Open your wireless card configuration. There should be an icon under Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network Connections or on the taskbar.

  2. Set your "Network Name" or "SSID" to "UCInet Mobile Access" (case sensitive, no quotes). This is very important, or your connection will not work!

  3. Set the network type to "Access Point" or "Infrastructure". Also, disable any encryption options.

  4. Save your configuration, then open Network Connections from the Control Panel in the Start Menu (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network Connections).

  5. Right-click on your wireless connection and select Properties.

   6.    Make sure you have TCP/IP installed1, select Internet Protocol and click on Properties. (See Figure 1)

Click on the IP Address tab. Click on Obtain an IP address automatically (See Figure 2).

8. Make sure "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is selected.

9. Click on the Advanced tab and make sure you have DHCP enabled.(See Figure 3).

10. Select OK and restart the computer when prompted.

1 If you scrolled down the entire list and did not see TCP/IP, you will need to add it. Windows XP will automatically install the drivers once you select Install and select Protocol. You will see TCP/IP listed, select and click Add.

Note: For Windows XP Home users, make sure you do not have any bridged connections tied to your wireless card. You will see any bridged connections if you open the Network Connections folder. Bridged connections may disrupt your ability to connect to UCInet Mobile Access!
