Configuring Spam Scanning for
Outlook XP for Windows
Creating a Spam folder
- Click on the File menu at the top of the screen, then choose New, then Folder (See Figure 1)

- If you do not see an option for Folder, you may have to click on the double-arrows at the bottom of the menu to uncover it (See Figure 2)

- Enter "Spam" or any folder name of your choosing into the dialog and
click OK (See Figure 3)

- You should now have a folder with whatever name you chose in your folder list
Creating a Spam filter
- Click on the Tools menu at the top of the screen, then choose Rules Wizard (See Figure 4)

- Click the New button (See Figure 5)

- Select Start from a blank rule and click Next (See Figure 6)

- Check the with specific words in the message header box* (See Figure 7)
* You may have to scroll to see this option
- Under "Rule description (click on an underlined value to edit it):" click on the underlined phrase specific words (See Figure 7)

- Enter the text "X-UCIRVINE-SpamScore: sssss " into the text
box (See Figure 8). This will set your Spamscore to 5. You can lower this
score by typing in fewer "s" for stricter filtering rules.
- Click Add then OK (See Figure 8)

- Click the Next button.
- Check the move it to the specified folder box (See Figure 9)
- Under "Rule description (click on an underlined value to edit it):" click
on the underlined word specified .

- Select your "Spam" Folder from the list* (See Figure 11)
* You may have to click the "+" next to Inbox to see this folder

- Your "Rules Wizard" window should now look like this (See Figure 12)

- If it does not, repeat steps 11-13, and make sure that you clicked on specified
in the right place. This will filter email sent to your '@UCI.EDU' address.
- Repeat steps 3 - 15 to create additional filters. As an example, enter "X-NACS_ES-MailScanner-SpamScore"
into the Header: text box to create an additional filter if you use E4E/EA
for your email delivery point. Check with your local Computer Support Coordinator
in your School or Department to see if there are additional Spam tags on their
local mail delivery systems.
- Click the Finish button, then OK to close the Rules Wizard
and save your Spam filter
Please Note: Because SpamAssassin is
unable to determine with 100% accuracy if a message is unsolicited, you
will want to check your Spam folder frequently for legitimate emails, as
well as to delete the actual Spam.
Now you are setup for Spam filtering. If you have any problems, please call
