POP to IMAP
Advantages of Migrating from POP to IMAP
- Improved performance when accessing your email account through your email client.
- IMAP is designed for shared access from mulitple devices where POP is not.
- Backups of your email account including folders are performed every night (excluding the trash and spam folder).
- You can access your email through webmail from anywhere provided you have a reliable internet connection.
- You wouldn't lose your email if your mobile device is stolen or your computer hard drive crashes.
- The more current email clients like Thunderbird (free at Mozilla's website) work best with IMAP.
- You can continue to work offline provided you have a current email client that supports that feature.
Migrating from POP to IMAP
WARNING: To Insure You Don't Lose Any Of Your Emails Please Follow The Instructions Below.
If you're not sure how to perform the steps below please contact your local computing support for assistance.
1. Backup or export your POP email.
DO NOT DELETE YOUR POP ACCOUNT IN YOUR EMAIL CLIENT BEFORE MAKING SURE YOU HAVE COMPLETED STEP 1.
2. Disable your POP account inside your email client.
3. Add an email account in your email client with an IMAP connection.
4. Migrate, import or restore from backup your POP email messages.
5. Delete your POP account only when you are absolutely sure your have all of your POP messages (optional step).
Some known issues and things to look out for with Apple Mail
- Do Not Delete Your POP account until you have successfully backed up your POP email messages.
- Make sure before you disable the account that you have already backed up your email messages.
- Add another email account with an IMAP connection and restore or import your POP messages before deleting your POP account.
