OIT Exchange
Introduction
OIT offers the Microsoft Exchange platform to departments who desire a feature-rich environment which integrates email, calendar and group communications. Clients gain rich and efficient access—to e-mail, calendars, attachments, contacts, and more—no matter where they are or what type of device they are using, without burdening local IT resources.
This service is targeted at complete departments, or independant workgroups. It is not recommended for individuals, or units who already use the campus' Oracle Calendar service.
Central Services, Local Freedom
OIT manages, so you don't have to:
- Software administration, including maintenance and patching
- Server hardware, replacements and upgrades
- Storage management
- Upgrade planning, provision and implementation
- Performance trending
- Backups, including single-user data restores
- 24x7 monitoring and service response
Our servers are housed in the Academic Data Center, an environment with the proper power and cooling infrastructure to keep servers happy.

- Apple Mail and iCal (Snow Leopard, Lion)
- Outlook Web Access
- Outlook Mobile Access
- Exchange ActiveSync (for PDAs)
- Microsoft Entourage
- Standards-based POP/IMAP/SMTP clients

Active Directory
OIT's Exchange service is housed in a dedicated Active Directory forest, AD.UCI.EDU. Departments are allocated an "OU" container and given complete administrative purvey over that container; departmental IT staff are free to administer their user and computer objects as needed, while OIT takes care of the Exchange environment.
