The Request for Proposals ended on July 21, 2008.
Broadcom Corporation has given UCI approximately 400 two to three year old Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron compute servers. These servers are rack-mounted “2U” devices that include minimal disk drives, but no operating system, displays or other peripherals.
The grand majority of the servers will be used in a shared, cluster environment open to all researchers at UCI, but there are other research and educational needs which cannot benefit from cluster computing. In support of those needs, OIT is issuing this Request for Proposals for small numbers of Broadcom servers.
Please include the following information in your proposal:
The name of the department or research group making the request, the individual serving as contact point, and his/her contact information.
The number of servers requested (5 or fewer).
A brief description of the research or instructional purpose the equipment would be used for and why it does not map well to the planned shared cluster environment.
Where the equipment would be housed and how the computer racks,
peripherals, electrical power and cooling required to operate it will
be provided.
» Please also indicate what older equipment would be
replaced by the requested computers to reduce campus electrical and
cooling loads.
The name of the individual or computer support group that will be responsible for setting up and maintaining the equipment.
If you have questions about the Broadcom donation or proposal process, please contact Allen Schiano <schiano@uci.edu>.
