A resource is an inanimate object, such as a conference room or a piece of equipment, that has its own agenda. When creating an event in one's agenda, users can include resources in the same way that they include other users. Resources can also be used to create a calendar for tracking information needed throughout an organization, such as travel schedules or academic programs. Information for each resource is kept in the Oracle Calendar directory, just as for individual users. Given that resources are shared throughout an organization and across organizations, strict naming conventions are required to insure that it is easy for a user to work with the resources in his/her organization.
Users may search the directory according to the Resource Name or Resource Number fields. Data essential to the use and definition of each resource is stored in these fields. The exact data stored depends on the type of resource in question. In these naming conventions, preformatted text in <brackets> indicates a variable. Naming conventions for resources rely upon pre-defined data for Schools and departments, as those field contents are pre-defined in the User Directory. Name Elements

Resources can be added to the Oracle Calendar directory via email to nacs@uci.edu. Include in this email a tab-delimited text file with the directory information for each resource, one resource per line. If the optional fields are not filled, please be sure to maintain the integrity of the columns by including the requisite tab characters. An example file to get you started can be downloaded from this web page. (sample file)

Like a user, resources are meeting participants, whose schedules can be viewed by other users. Given that resources are typically used within an organization, yet not across the enterprise, a department administrator will want to configure the access rights for each resource. Typically a resource's availability is managed by a particular person within an organization; that person should have Designate authority for the resource's calendar.
The method for manipulating a resource's access rights is the same for a user; after logging in to the Oracle Calendar client (as the resource), the Options Menu is used to change the password or manipulate the Access Rights. Within the Access Rights, each access rights for each access type can be set for all (default) users, or on a per-user basis.
Access types are broken down into three categories:
- Designate - A user with designate authority for a resource can approve/disapprove requests to use that resource.
- Viewing - Allow or disallow users to directly view the contents of the resource's calendar.
- Tasks (Viewing) - Allow or disallow users to directly view and tasks associated with the resource's calendar.
- Scheduling - Allow or disallow users to directly request a resource for an agenda event.
For detailed instructions on manipulating Access Rights, please see chapters 9 and 10 of the User Guide.
